The Mestiachala River: The Glacial River of Mestia

The Mestiachala River (მდინარე მესტიაჭალა) is a powerful glacial river that flows directly through Mestia, the regional capital and tourist hub of Upper Svaneti. It is formed by the confluence of two torrents that flow from the massive Chalaati and Murkvami glaciers on the southern slopes of the Main Caucasus Range. The river is a defining feature of Mestia’s spectacular landscape, a roaring torrent of milky, grey-green water that serves as a constant reminder of the immense glaciers looming just above the town.

The river is a right tributary of the Mulkhura River, which it joins at the southern edge of Mestia. The Mestiachala valley provides the main access route for one of Svaneti’s most popular day hikes: the trek to the tongue of the Chalaati Glacier. The river’s power is palpable, its bed a wide expanse of boulders and glacial debris. For visitors to Mestia, the Mestiachala is an ever-present symbol of the wild, untamed nature of the High Caucasus.

📍 Geography & Course

The Mestiachala begins where the streams from two of Svaneti’s largest valley glaciers merge. It flows south through a classic U-shaped glacial valley. Its course is steep and turbulent. The river has built up a significant alluvial fan where it enters the main Mulkhura valley, and the town of Mestia is partly built on this fan.

🌿 Nature & Ecology

The river valley is a high-alpine environment. Its upper reaches are dominated by moraines and the bare ice of the Chalaati glacier. Lower down, the slopes are covered with pine and birch forests. The valley is part of the Svaneti protected areas and is a habitat for high-altitude wildlife. The river’s power and sediment load mean it supports limited aquatic life.

🏛️ History & Culture

The river is central to the town of Mestia, the historical and cultural heart of Svaneti.

  • Mestia: The river flows past the traditional Svan tower houses that make Mestia a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Chalaati Glacier Trek: The trail along the river to the glacier is one of the most iconic experiences in Svaneti, leading visitors to the very edge of an active glacier.

🚣 Activities & Tourism

  • Hiking to Chalaati Glacier: This is the most popular activity associated with the river. A well-marked trail follows the valley to the glacier’s tongue.
  • Exploring Mestia: The river is a key feature of the town, with several bridges crossing it, including a historic suspension bridge.
  • Nature Photography: The views of the river with the glaciers and surrounding peaks are spectacular.

🛤️ Accessibility

The Mestiachala is extremely accessible. It flows through the center of Mestia. A gravel road, passable for 4×4 vehicles, leads several kilometers up the valley towards the Chalaati Glacier, shortening the hike. Mestia is well-connected by road and has a regional airport.
