The Tekhuri River: Samegrelo’s Adventure Capital

The Tekhuri River (მდინარე ტეხური) is a dynamic and powerful river in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region of western Georgia, celebrated for its dramatic natural beauty and adventure tourism potential. It originates from the glaciers and snowfields near the 3,005-meter-high Tekhuri peak on the Egrisi Range, also known as the Samegrelo Mountains. From its high-altitude source, the river charges south, carving one of Georgia’s most spectacular limestone canyons through the mountains, a feature that has recently made it a hotspot for visitors seeking thrilling experiences.

The Tekhuri Canyon is the river’s main attraction, a place of towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and emerald-green water. In recent years, it has become a premier destination for white-water rafting and canyoning, offering an adrenaline-pumping journey through a breathtaking landscape. The upper reaches of the Tekhuri valley were once home to the popular Soviet-era balneological resort of Lebarde, known for its mineral waters. Today, the river’s journey from the rugged, wild mountains to the serene Kolkheti Lowland, where it joins the Rioni River, encapsulates the diverse and stunning geography of the Samegrelo region.

🌿 Nature & Ecology

The Tekhuri valley boasts rich Colchic flora, with forests of beech, chestnut, and hornbeam. The canyon’s unique microclimate supports rare plant species. The river is home to various fish, including trout in its upper reaches. The surrounding forests are habitats for brown bears, roe deer, and wild boars.

🏛️ History & Culture

The area around the lower Tekhuri is historically significant. The ancient fortress city of Nokalakevi (Archaeopolis), a major political center of the Lazica kingdom, is located on its banks. This archaeological site is one of the most important in Georgia, showcasing layers of history from antiquity to the Middle Ages.

🚣 Activities & Tourism

  • White-Water Rafting: The Tekhuri Canyon is one of the best places in Georgia for commercial rafting, offering routes of varying difficulty.
  • Canyoning & Kayaking: The dramatic landscape and clean water make it ideal for these adventure sports.

  • Cultural Visits: A trip to the Nokalakevi archaeological site is a must for history enthusiasts.

🛤️ Accessibility

The lower part of the canyon and the main rafting start points are accessible from the town of Martvili. The roads into the upper valley can be more challenging and may require a 4×4 vehicle. The area is best visited from late spring to early autumn when the weather is favorable and water levels are suitable for rafting.
