The story of the Sighnaghi wall is the story of survival. In the 18th century, eastern Georgia was under constant threat from the *Lekianoba*, terrifying raids by Dagestani tribesmen who swept down from the Caucasus mountains to plunder villages and capture slaves. To counter this threat, Erekle II built a series of massive refuge fortresses, and Sighnaghi is the grandest of them all. When the alarm was sounded, thousands of people from the surrounding villages would flee with their livestock into the safety of the walled city.

The wall is a masterpiece of military engineering. Following the contours of the steep hills, it is punctuated by 23 defensive towers and 6 arched gateways. Each tower was named after a nearby village and was designated as that village’s specific refuge point. Today, you can walk along long stretches of the restored wall, climb its towers, and experience the same breathtaking views that the watchmen once surveyed—a spectacular panorama of the Alazani Valley with the mighty Caucasus Mountains rising in the distance.
