Juta, Fifth Season, the Lakes
Have you ever felt so tired of the city noise that you wanted to escape to the mountains? If so, then Juta is exactly the place you need to go. Imagine a small, fairytale-like village in the heart of the Caucasus, in the Kazbegi Municipality, at an altitude of 2200 meters, from where an unforgettable adventure begins.
I want to tell you about one of my favorite routes – the path from the village of Juta to the Juta Lakes. This isn’t just a hike; it’s a journey filled with emotions.
The First Challenge: The Ascent to “Fifth Season”
As soon as you park your car in Juta and put on your backpack, the adventure begins. The first, somewhat tiring section awaits you – a 1.3 km hike with a fairly steep ascent to the hotel and campsite, “Fifth Season”. This part takes about 30-40 minutes and climbs roughly 100 vertical meters. Yes, it might take your breath away a little, but believe me, every step is worth it. The higher you climb, the more the fantastic panorama of the Juta valley unfolds at your feet.
When you reach “Fifth Season,” take a deep breath, drop onto a wooden bench, and gaze at the jagged peaks of the Chaukhi mountains. This is the moment you realize you are in true paradise. Here, you can have a cold drink, grab a snack, and prepare for the most beautiful part of the route.
From “Fifth Season” to the Lakes
This is where the real magic begins. From here, the trail continues for about 4-5 kilometers one way. The path follows the Chaukhistskali river valley and is much easier and more pleasant to walk. Everything around you is green – alpine meadows, thousands of colorful flowers, and the constant sound of the river in the background. The main star, of course, is the Chaukhi Massif, also known as the “Georgian Dolomites.” Its formidable, rocky peaks make you feel as if you are on another planet.
Along the way, you’ll have to cross small streams, which is quite pleasant in the heat. Soon, you’ll come across a small but beautiful waterfall – a perfect spot for photos and cooling off.
And finally… the Juta Lake! This is the culmination of the route, sitting at an altitude of approximately 2560 meters. It’s a small, crystal-clear, mirror-like lake reflecting the Chaukhi mountains. Time seems to stand still here. Sit on the grass, take out your sandwiches, close your eyes, and just enjoy the complete tranquility and beauty.

A Few Friendly Tips for the Hike
- When to go? The best time is summer, from late June to mid-September, when the trails are dry and everything is in bloom.
- What to wear and bring? Be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes. The weather in the mountains can change in seconds, so bring a raincoat or a warm layer. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, plenty of water, and some chocolate for energy!
- Is it very difficult? No, not at all. The main thing is to endure the first ascent. The rest of the way is a real pleasure. If you don’t feel like walking, you can also rent a horse on the spot.
