The Satapela River: The Stream of the Dinosaur Footprints
The Satapela River (მდინარე სათოფელა) is a small, mostly underground karst stream located in the Tskaltubo Municipality of Imereti, western Georgia. It is world-famous not for its size, but for flowing through the heart of the Sataplia Nature Reserve, a major tourist attraction renowned for its beautiful karst cave and, most importantly, the impeccably preserved fossilized dinosaur footprints found on its banks. The name “Sataplia” means “place of honey,” named for the ancient tradition of collecting wild honey from the cliffs, but today it is synonymous with dinosaurs.
The river emerges from the ground, flows through the main chamber of the Sataplia Cave, creating beautiful underground formations, and then disappears again into the limestone massif.
