The Rokistsqali River: A River of the Roki Pass
The Rokistsqali River (მდინარე როკისწყალი) is a high-altitude river in the Java Municipality of northern Shida Kartli, Georgia. As a left tributary of the Great Liakhvi River, it originates on the southern slopes of the Main Caucasus Range near the strategically vital Roki Pass. This pass connects the South Caucasus (Georgia) with the North Caucasus (Russia) and is the route of the Roki Tunnel. The river flows through a wild, alpine landscape, a region of great geopolitical significance and natural beauty.
The valley is very sparsely populated and its modern history is defined by its role as a major transport corridor between Russia and the Tskhinvali Region. The river itself is a powerful mountain torrent, fed by snowmelt and glaciers. Due to the unresolved conflict and the region’s political status, the Rokistsqali valley is completely inaccessible to tourists and most Georgians.
