The Pshavis Aragvi River: Waterway of a Historic Highland

The Pshavis Aragvi River (მდინარე ფშავის არაგვი) is one of the most famous and culturally significant rivers in eastern Georgia. It flows through the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, originating on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains near Borbalo Peak. The river carves a deep and incredibly scenic gorge through the historical-ethnographic region of Pshavi, a land renowned for its ancient traditions, unique poetry, and the fierce independence of its people.

The Pshavis Aragvi flows southwards, collecting numerous mountain streams before joining the Tetri Aragvi near the Zhinvali Reservoir. Together, they form the Aragvi River, which then flows to meet the Mtkvari at the ancient capital of Mtskheta. The river valley is a stunning example of Caucasus mountain landscape, with steep, forested slopes, small, fortified villages, and medieval watchtowers. It is the heartland of Pshavian culture, immortalized in the works of the great Georgian poet Vazha-Pshavela, whose home village of Chargali is located within the valley. The river is not just a geographical feature but the very soul of the Pshavi region.
