The Lailchala River: A Glacial Stream of Mount Laila

The Lailchala River (მდინარე ლაილჭალა) is a high-altitude glacial river in the Mestia Municipality of Upper Svaneti. It is a right tributary of the Mestia-Chala river, which in turn flows into the Mulkhura, making it part of the greater Enguri River basin. The river is named after the magnificent Mount Laila, a prominent 4,008-meter peak in the Svaneti Range, from whose glaciers the river is born. The Lailchala flows through a remote and wild valley, a destination for experienced trekkers and mountaineers.

The river valley is a place of raw, alpine beauty, characterized by moraines, glaciers, and stunning views of the surrounding peaks. It is not easily accessible and represents the challenging but rewarding wilderness that draws adventurers to Svaneti. Its cold, milky water is a testament to its glacial origins, and it is a vital part of the pristine high-mountain ecosystem of the region.
