The Khde River (მდინარე ხდე) is a powerful, high-mountain river in the Kazbegi Municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. It is one of the wildest and most dramatic rivers in the Georgian Caucasus, originating from glaciers on the slopes of the Khde massif. The river flows through the stunning and remote Khde Gorge, a place of immense natural beauty, before joining the Tergi (Terek) River as a right tributary.

The Khde Gorge is known for its raw, untouched wilderness, towering cliffs, and numerous waterfalls cascading down its sides. The river itself is a classic glacial torrent, with cold, turbulent water and a very rapid flow. 📍 Geography & Course

The Khde flows in a deep, canyon-like gorge with extremely steep sides. Its course is marked by numerous rapids and waterfalls. The valley is difficult to navigate, with the river dominating the landscape. It descends rapidly from its glacial source to its confluence with the Tergi.

The ecosystem of the Khde Gorge is a pristine example of the high Caucasus environment. It includes subalpine forests of birch and rhododendron, giving way to vast alpine meadows and glaciers at higher altitudes. 🛤️ Accessibility

The Khde Gorge is one of the most difficult-to-access areas in the Kazbegi region. A 4×4 track leads partway into the valley from the Georgian Military Highway, but reaching the upper gorge requires extensive and challenging hiking. It is only accessible in the summer and early autumn.
