The Chorokhi River: A Mighty Transboundary Waterway

The Chorokhi River (მდინარე ჭოროხი) is one of the most powerful and significant rivers in the Black Sea basin, a major transboundary waterway that begins in northeastern Turkey and enters Georgia in the Adjara region. Known as the Çoruh in Turkey, it flows for 438 kilometers in total, with its final 26 kilometers running through Georgia before it empties into the Black Sea just south of Batumi. The Chorokhi is famed for its immense power, rapid flow, and the dramatic, deep gorges it has carved through the Pontic Mountains.

In Georgia, the Chorokhi is a defining feature of the coastal landscape near Batumi. Its wide delta is a crucial area for biodiversity, especially for migratory birds, and is recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA). The river’s powerful current has been harnessed for hydropower, with numerous dams built along its course in Turkey and plans for one in Georgia. For Georgians, the Chorokhi is not just a river but a symbol of the historic lands of Tao-Klarjeti (now in Turkey) from which it flows, and a vital natural resource for the Adjara region.
