The Cheratkhevi River: A Waterway of Outer Kakheti

The Cheratkhevi River (მდინარე ჭერათხევი) is a river in the Signagi Municipality of the Kakheti region, flowing through the arid and semi-desert landscape of Outer Kakheti (Gare Kakheti). It originates on the southern slopes of the Gombori Range and flows southeast to join the Iori River. Unlike the rivers of Inner Kakheti that flow through lush vineyards, the Cheratkhevi traverses a landscape of dry steppes, rolling hills, and badlands.

This region is historically significant, most notably as the wider area of the Davit Gareja monastery complex, a vast rock-hewn monastic center that was a cradle of Georgian spiritual and cultural life. The Cheratkhevi itself is often a seasonal river, with its flow diminishing significantly during the dry summer months. Its valley, though seemingly stark, supports a unique ecosystem adapted to arid conditions and offers dramatic, expansive views, providing a very different perspective on the diverse geography of Kakheti.
