The Chailuri River: A Waterway of Outer Kakheti

The Chailuri River (მდინარე ჩაილური) is a river in the Sagarejo Municipality of the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia. It originates on the southern slopes of the Gombori Range and flows south across the arid and semi-desert landscapes of the Iori Plateau, a region also known as Gare Kakheti (Outer Kakheti). The Chailuri is a left tributary of the Iori River.

The river is a typical waterway of this unique Georgian landscape, often seasonal in its flow, becoming powerful after rains and shrinking during dry periods. Its valley is characterized by low, rolling hills, steppe vegetation, and sparse forests. This region is historically known for its strategic importance, guarding the eastern approaches to central Georgia. The area around the Chailuri is home to several historical monuments, including the ruins of medieval fortresses like Manavi. For travelers, the Chailuri valley offers a very different vision of Kakheti—not of vineyards, but of wide-open spaces, dramatic skies, and a sense of rugged history.
