The Algeti River (მდინარე ალგეთი) is a significant river in the Kvemo Kartli region of southeastern Georgia, renowned for the stunning natural and historical landscapes it flows through. Originating on the slopes of the Trialeti Range near the formidable Mount Kldekari, the river carves a dramatic path through mountains and plains before joining the Mtkvari (Kura) River. The Algeti is most famous for its upper section, which forms a deep, forested canyon that is now the centerpiece of the Algeti National Park, a sanctuary of biodiversity located just an hour’s drive from Tbilisi.

The river’s journey begins in a wild, mountainous area and transitions into the agricultural plains of Kvemo Kartli. This journey has created diverse ecosystems, from dense, mixed forests in the highlands to the arid landscapes of the lowlands. The Algeti River begins as a swift mountain stream. In its upper course, it flows through the spectacular Algeti Canyon, a deep gorge with steep, forest-covered slopes. This section is the core of Algeti National Park. After leaving the mountains, the river enters the plains, its flow slows, and its valley widens. It irrigates the fertile lands around the towns of Marneuli and Tetritskaro. The Algeti Reservoir, located in the middle course, is a significant feature, regulating the river’s flow and providing water for agriculture.

🛤️ Accessibility

The lower parts of the river can be reached via the main highways in the Kvemo Kartli region. The area is suitable for visiting year-round, though hiking is best from late spring to autumn.
