Samtsevrisi Fortress: The Guardian of the Monastery and the River
Rising on a high, conical hill above the Mtkvari River and the nearby Samtsevrisi Monastery, this fortress is a classic medieval stronghold in a dramatic location. It served a dual purpose: to protect the important monastery below and to control the strategic Mtkvari river valley, a major artery of communication and transport.
