Mount Chanchakhistsveri (Chaukhi Massif): The Georgian Dolomites

Not all of Georgia’s great mountains are clad in ice and snow. Near the village of Juta, in the highlands of Kazbegi, lies a breathtaking anomaly: the Chaukhi Massif. This isn’t a single peak but a fortress of jagged, vertical rock towers that erupt from the green alpine meadows below. Known as the “Georgian Dolomites,” the sight is absolutely stunning. It feels like a piece of the Italian Alps was airlifted and dropped into the heart of the Caucasus. The highest of these towers is Chanchakhistsveri.

The energy here is completely different from the great snow peaks. It’s a place of vibrant life and vertical ambition. The valleys leading to the massif are lush and green, filled with wildflowers and grazing horses. But as you get closer, the idyllic scene gives way to the raw, intimidating power of sheer rock. Chaukhi is a playground for rock climbers. Its towers offer everything from moderate scrambles to some of the most challenging multi-pitch rock climbing routes in Georgia.

The appeal of Chaukhi is its accessibility and variety. Unlike the multi-week expeditions required for the 5,000-meter peaks, the base of Chaukhi can be reached in a few hours’ hike from Juta. This allows climbers to set up a base camp and attempt multiple routes on the different towers. It’s a place of community, where hikers, scramblers, and serious rock climbers share the same stunning landscape. The challenge here is not about altitude or glaciers, but about technical skill, strength, and nerve on vertical rock.

Reaching the summit of Chanchakhistsveri, or any of the Chaukhi towers, offers a uniquely thrilling perspective. You are perched on a narrow spire of rock, with dizzying drops on all sides and a fantastic view of the glaciated giant, Kazbek, in the distance. It’s a feeling of pure, unadulterated exposure and freedom. The Chaukhi Massif is a rock climber’s paradise and a hiker’s dream, a special corner of the Caucasus where the beauty is sharp, dramatic, and accessible.
