About this activity

To the Chalaadi Glacier: A Touch of Eternal Ice

Imagine walking through a forest on a hot summer day, hearing the birds chirp, with green all around you, and then suddenly, in just a few steps, you find yourself in a world of eternal ice, with a freezing breeze blowing from it. This isn’t a fairy tale. This is the Chalaadi Glacier – a place where you can best feel the contrasts of Svaneti’s nature.

Located near Mestia, this trail is one of the most popular and, most importantly, easily accessible ways to see a real, living glacier with your own eyes and to feel its power.

From Forest Path to a World of Chaos: The Way to the Glacier

The adventure begins after a short drive from Mestia, where the trail crosses a suspension bridge over the Mestiachala River. Crossing the bridge is a small adventure in itself! Afterwards, the path leads through a coniferous forest, following the riverbed. This section is almost flat and very pleasant to walk.

There’s a tranquility all around, broken only by the sound of the river and your footsteps. It’s the perfect path for relaxing, thinking, and connecting with nature. But don’t be fooled; this peace is only temporary…

The First Encounter: When the Glacier Begins to Breathe

After about an hour of walking, the forest thins out, and a completely different landscape unfolds before you – a valley covered with huge rocks, the glacier’s moraine. Here, the trail moves onto the rocks and requires a bit more attention. It’s here that you’ll first feel the glacier’s breath – the air becomes noticeably colder.

And finally… there it is! The tongue of the Chalaadi Glacier, lying like a monster among the cliffs. Standing before it, you realize the immense power of nature. At the base of the glacier, there is an ice cave from which the Mestiachala River is born. This spectacle is both dangerous and mesmerizing.

Hike Details at a Glance

  • Starting Point: Suspension bridge over the Mestiachala River
  • Difficulty: Easy (the last section is of medium difficulty)
  • Total Distance (Round Trip): Approx. 5-6 kilometers
  • Average Duration: 3-4 hours (including breaks)
  • Total Elevation Gain: Approx. 200-300 meters

⚠️ Safety First!

  • When to go? The best period is from late June through September.
  • Equipment: Be sure to wear sturdy shoes that won’t slip on the rocks. Bring warm clothing, as it gets very cold near the glacier.
  • The Main Rule: Never, under any circumstances, enter the ice cave or get too close to the glacier’s edge! Rocks and blocks of ice are constantly falling from it, which is lethally dangerous. Maintain a safe distance and enjoy the view from afar.

The hike to the Chalaadi Glacier is a short but impressive journey that shows you a completely different, raw, and primal side of Svaneti’s nature. It’s a chance to practically touch a history that has been created over thousands of years.
