About this activity

At the Foot of Ushba: A Journey to the Waterfall and Glacier in the Heart of Svaneti

There are places that are simply beautiful, and then there are places that have a soul. Ushba is exactly that – a peak whose stark beauty intimidates you even from a distance, yet draws you in like a magnet. If you want to see this twin-peaked giant up close and feel its incredible energy, then the trail from the village of Mazeri to the Ushba waterfall and glacier must be on your travel list.

This isn’t just a hike; it’s a true pilgrimage to one of the most mystical places in Svaneti.

A Calm Beginning: The Path to the Border Post

The adventure begins at the end of the village of Mazeri, starting from a small bridge. The first few kilometers follow an almost flat, pleasant path along the Dolra river valley. All around you is a beautiful forest, meadows full of flowers, and the soothing sound of the river. This section is perfect for warming up and preparing for the challenge ahead.

Soon you will reach the Border Police checkpoint. Here, you must present an ID card or passport. After registering, you continue on your way, slowly realizing that the real adventure is just beginning.

The First Reward: The Ushba Waterfall

After the checkpoint, the trail gradually gains elevation and becomes steeper. The path winds through the forest, and you’ll need to cross small streams in a few places. After about two hours of walking, you’ll hear a sound in the distance that gets louder and louder – it’s the Ushba Waterfall!

The mass of water cascading down the huge cliff creates an incredible spectacle. Here you can rest, cool off in the spray, and enjoy the power that emanates from this place. For many hikers, this is the final point of the route, but if you have the strength and desire, the main prize awaits you.

The Climax: Encounter with the Ushba Glacier

From the waterfall, the path becomes even more challenging. The trail crosses onto a rocky moraine, where great care is needed. This section is the most physically demanding, but with every step, Ushba gets closer and closer.

And finally… you are there! In front of the Ushba Glacier, which descends from the mountain slopes like a giant tongue. In this moment, all fatigue is forgotten. The silence, broken only by the cracking of ice and the sound of the wind, and the 4,710-meter peak rising before you – this is the feeling that was worth the long journey.
