The Snostsqali River: The Gateway to Juta and the Chaukhi Massif

The Snostsqali River (მდინარე სნოსწყალი) is a river in the Kazbegi Municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. As a right tributary of the Tergi (Terek) River, it originates on the slopes of the Main Caucasus Range and flows through the beautiful and historic Sno Valley. The river is a major feature of the Kazbegi region, a premier destination for mountain tourism in Georgia. Its valley serves as the gateway to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the country, including the village of Juta and the dramatic, dolomite peaks of the Chaukhi Massif, often called the “Georgian Dolomites.”

The river flows past the village of Sno, the birthplace of Georgia’s current patriarch, Ilia II, and known for its medieval watchtower and giant stone portraits of Georgian poets carved by a local artist. The Snostsqali valley is a place where stunning nature, rich history, and vibrant tourism converge. Its clear, cold waters are a constant presence on the popular trekking and 4×4 routes that lead deep into the heart of the Caucasus.
