The Laskadura River: A Glacial Giant of Svaneti

The Laskadura River (მდინარე ლასკადურა) is a powerful, high-altitude glacial river in the Mestia Municipality of Upper Svaneti. It is a significant right tributary of the Enguri River, originating from the massive Laskadura Glacier on the southern slopes of the Main Caucasus Range. The river flows through an exceptionally wild, remote, and uninhabited valley, representing the raw power of the Caucasus at its most extreme. The Laskadura is known only to elite mountaineers and expedition trekkers, as its valley is a gateway to some of the most challenging peaks and passes in Svaneti.

The river’s water is thick with glacial milk, giving it a distinct grey color, and its flow is a thunderous torrent, especially during the summer melt. The valley is a classic example of a high-alpine glacial landscape, with towering rock walls, active glaciers, and vast moraine fields. It is a place of elemental forces and profound wilderness, completely untouched by modern infrastructure.
