The Lakbe River: A Kakhetian Mountain Stream

The Lakbe River (მდინარე ლაკბე) is a small river in the Kvareli Municipality of Georgia’s eastern Kakheti region. It is one of the many mountain streams that originate on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus and flow down into the Alazani Valley. As a left tributary of the Duruji River, the Lakbe is part of the Alazani river basin. It flows through a remote and forested landscape, providing clean mountain water to the region. The river is not a tourist destination but is a characteristic feature of the wild, beautiful foothills that border the Kakhetian wine country.

The river’s course is short and steep, fed by rainfall and snowmelt. Its valley is sparsely populated, which has helped to preserve its natural environment. It represents the pristine nature that exists just beyond the cultivated vineyards of the Alazani plain.
