The Katskhura River: Stream of the Katskhi Pillar
The Katskhura River (მდინარე კაცხურა) is a river in the Chiatura Municipality of Imereti, western Georgia. As a right tributary of the Kvirila River, it flows through a dramatic karst landscape of limestone gorges and caves. The river is world-famous not for its size, but for the astonishing natural and spiritual monument located in its valley: the Katskhi Pillar (Katskhis Sveti). This 40-meter high natural limestone monolith, with a small church and hermit’s cell perched on its tiny summit, is one of Georgia’s most iconic and mysterious landmarks.
