The Choloki River: A Historic Boundary

The Choloki River (მდინარე ჩოლოქი) is a river in western Georgia that forms the natural boundary between the regions of Guria and Adjara. It originates on the western slopes of the Meskheti Range and flows westwards to empty into the Black Sea just south of the resort town of Kobuleti. While relatively short, the river holds significant historical importance for Georgia.

The Choloki is famously known as the site of the Battle of the Choloki River on June 4, 1854, during the Crimean War. In this battle, a small Georgian force under the command of General Ivane Andronikashvili decisively defeated a much larger Ottoman army, a victory that resonated deeply in the national consciousness. Today, the river flows through a subtropical landscape of citrus groves, tea plantations (though many are now overgrown), and hazelnut orchards, characteristic of the Black Sea coastal region. It remains a symbol of Georgian resilience and a key geographical marker.
