Mutso: The Ghost Fortress on the Edge of the World
Clinging to a high, rocky peak in the remote region of Khevsureti, the fortress-village of Mutso is one of the most dramatic and atmospheric historical sites in all of Georgia. For centuries, this nearly vertical village was a powerful stronghold that guarded Georgia’s northern border with Chechnya. Largely abandoned for over a century, its crumbling towers and fortified houses are a haunting testament to the fierce and independent spirit of the Khevsur people.

The village is a complex of around 30 medieval fortified dwellings and four combat towers, all arranged on incredibly steep terraces. Life here was harsh, and defense was paramount. A visit to Mutso is an epic adventure. Reaching it requires a long and difficult 4×4 journey deep into the mountains, followed by a very steep and strenuous hike up to the ruins. Today, thanks to recent restoration efforts, visitors can more safely explore this incredible monument. The views from the top, looking down the Andaki river gorge and towards the border, are breathtaking.
