About this activity

From Mestia to the Koruldi Lakes: A Hike Above the Clouds

Svaneti is a place whose mystical beauty stays in your heart forever once you’ve visited. The towers, the peaks, and that unique feeling of freedom… If you want to experience all of this at once and see the panorama of Svaneti from a bird’s-eye view, then the trail from Mestia to the Koruldi Lakes is for you.

I’ll tell you right away, this is not a light stroll. This is a real challenge, an adventure that rewards you so greatly at the end that every drop of sweat is worth it.

The Never-Ending Ascent: The Path from Mestia to the Cross

Your hike begins directly from the center of Mestia and starts with a steep climb right from the get-go. The path winds between the village houses and slowly enters the forest. The key here is patience and the right pace. Don’t rush, breathe deeply, and enjoy watching Mestia shrink below you.

After several hours of rather tiring walking, you will reach the first main destination – the cross erected on the mountain top. This is the spot where you first get a 360-degree panoramic view. It will take your breath away. On one side is Mestia with its towers, and on the other, the magnificent peaks of Tetnuldi and Ushba are visible.

A Walk Along the Ridge: From the Cross to the Lakes

Be sure to take a break at the cross, have a snack, and prepare for the most beautiful part of the route. From here, the trail follows the mountain ridge and becomes relatively flat. Walking is much easier, and the beauty around you is unreal. You’ll feel like you’re on top of the world; everywhere you look, there are mountains.

This section is full of alpine flowers, small streams, and incredible views. The twin-peaked Ushba seems to be within arm’s reach, gazing at you in all its glory.

And finally… the Koruldi Lakes! Don’t expect huge lakes. These are several small, alpine lakes that shimmer with an emerald color at an altitude of 2740 meters. Their main charm is that in calm weather, their mirror-like surfaces reflect Ushba and the surrounding peaks. This sight is beyond words.

Hike Details at a Glance

  • Starting Point: Mestia Center (approx. 1400 m)
  • Highest Point (Lakes): approx. 2740 meters
  • Total Distance (Round Trip): approx. 16-18 kilometers
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Total Elevation Gain: approx. 1340 meters
  • Average Duration: 7-9 hours (including breaks)

A Few Friendly Tips

  • When to go? The best period is from mid-July to mid-September, when the trail is free of snow.
  • Equipment: Sturdy, high-ankle hiking boots are essential. Trekking poles will be very helpful, especially on the descent. Bring plenty of water, energy bars, sunscreen, and a warm, waterproof jacket – the weather changes quickly at this altitude.
  • Physical Fitness: This hike requires good physical condition. If you are unsure of your abilities, you can take an off-road vehicle (a Delica) up to the cross and start your hike from there.

The hike to the Koruldi Lakes is both a test and a meditation. It’s a path that will tire you out but, at the same time, fill you with energy and show you a side of Svaneti that can’t be seen from anywhere else.
