Nokalakevi Thermal Spring: A Natural Spa and a World of Legends in Samegrelo

In the Samegrelo region, near the historic Nokalakevi Fortress, a unique natural wonder is hidden on the bank of the Tekhuri River – the Nokalakevi Thermal Spring. This is a place where hot, mineral-rich waters rise directly from the ground, offering an unforgettable experience to visitors. The hot sulfur baths, beautiful landscapes, and historical environment make this place ideal for relaxation and adventure seekers.

Natural Baths and Healing Properties

Nokalakevi’s thermal water is rich in hydrogen sulfide and other minerals, which are believed to have healing properties. According to locals and visitors, the water is beneficial for treating and preventing diseases of the musculoskeletal, skin, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.

The water temperature reaches 60-80°C, but it naturally mixes with the cold water of the Tekhuri River, creating a comfortable temperature for bathing. Visitors can use the natural “baths” enclosed by river stones, as well as small, primitive pools set up by locals where the water temperature varies. This contrast – hot mineral water and a cold mountain river – creates a particularly rejuvenating and invigorating effect.

The Legend of “Dedamoka”

A sad and beautiful legend about “Dedamoka” (the pregnant mother) is connected to the Nokalakevi Thermal Spring. According to the story, during an enemy invasion, a pregnant woman jumped into the river to escape captivity. The water could not save her and turned her into stone. Even today, near the spring, you can see a large boulder associated with this legend, adding a mystical atmosphere to the place.
