The Pirikita Alazani River: The Northern River of Tusheti

The Pirikita Alazani River (მდინარე პირიქითი ალაზანი) is one of the two principal rivers of the remote Tusheti highland region in northeastern Georgia. It originates on the southern slopes of the Pirikita Range of the Greater Caucasus and flows eastward through the spectacular Pirikita Gorge. This valley is renowned for its wild beauty and for being home to some of Tusheti’s most iconic and best-preserved tower villages, including Dartlo, Parsma, and Girevi. The river is a powerful, untamed force that has shaped one of the most culturally unique and scenically breathtaking landscapes in Georgia.

The river flows through the heart of the Tusheti National Park, a land of high peaks, alpine meadows, and ancient pastoralist traditions. The Pirikita Alazani valley offers a more remote and wild experience than the main Tushetis Alazani valley. After its dramatic journey through the gorge, it joins the Tushetis Alazani, and their confluence marks the beginning of the great Alazani River. For trekkers and adventurers, this river valley is the ultimate destination for experiencing the authentic spirit of Tusheti.
